It is dangerous to cut in a vertical manner because when the long knife cut through the ratan it also moves downwards towards your knee. That happened during my last farm trip, and my knee got a 40mm length wound. The knife cut through my thick jean.
Don't worry, I always brought around first aid medicine and the bleeding stopped within few minutes. Nowadays, I am no more fear of blood. Unlike the young days, I did not take up medicine and against my father's wish just because I feared of blood!
