Light Brown Dragonfly

It appears to me that Dragon flies have also many colours on the body as well as the wings,  like butterflies.
How do they decide the colours? They have only three cycles of life, the egg, the nymph and the adult, so, is it wherever the nymph stays, the colour of the background decides the colours of the body and the wings, or purely genetic instructions only?
Isn't environment  played an important part in growth for all living things?
