The Finely designed long Nest

It dropped on my chair from nowhere (probably from ceiling). I found some creature sneaking out the end opening and the moment disturbed, retreated back. By the time I took out the camera, the creature has gone, flew away likely.
The nest is made up of wood fibres and mud and is very spongy. Why the nest tapers instead of a tube? All larvae seem to be uniform and not tapering!
How the larva of the insect designs and makes such finely nest is beyond my comprehension! Genetic Instructions?
